A Wooden Box…

While quietly walking through one of the historic hangars during a lull in the Battle of Britain Airshow last month, a mechanic pushed a cart bypassing me to an even quieter corner. Being ever curious, I noticed a rather derelict wooden box on the cart's second shelf.

Taking the opportunity to ask, I was once again rewarded with a most unexpected answer. He replied that it was in fact a mechanics toolbox from the war. He apologized for the shabby condition it was in, and mentioned that it was in need of further repair if it was to survive for any length of time going forward.

Sometimes one just has to ask...and paying attention doesn't hurt. I'll ask to see what's inside the next time...

The jacket is from the collection at the 390th Memorial Museum in Tucson, Arizona and is one of over 100 jackets that were photographed for the book "Bomber Boys: Flight Jacket Art." Contemporary portraits of many of the veterans, and their stories appear in the book, which has already won two international design awards. A vailable now, it's not too early to begin thinking about Christmas! The book is also available at these fine museum gift shops across the USA, with the proceeds benefitting the museum.
